When it comes to taking your child to the dentist, what you do before, during, and after the appointment can help your child have the best experience possible. Uncertainty about what to expect can make going to the dentist hard for kids (and sometimes for their parents too). Doing things to prepare for the appointment and focusing on what you do know, helps kids and parents to manage uncertainty and feel more confident going into new situations or ones that can be a challenge.
Here are a few tips to help your family have smooth sailing with your child’s dental care.
Know before you go:
- Find out if there’s anything you should bring to the appointment.
- For example, an insurance card, retainer or mouth guard.
- Find out, if possible, what the plan for the appointment will be. This way if your child asks, you can let them know some specifics.
- For example, will they be taking x-rays? How long should the appointment last?
- Ask if there are any do’s or don’ts before the appointment.
- For example, can your child eat before the appointment, should they brush their teeth first, can they drink water or other beverages, etc.?
For the appointment:
- Try to help your child/yourself relax (see this blog for tips on relaxation techniques!).
- Come prepared with anything your child/you will need for the appointment. Consider bringing a book or toy that will keep your child entertained if you have to wait to be seen.
- Ask any questions so that you and your child understand what’s going on and can feel comfortable. See this blog for tips on how to feel comfortable asking questions at your child’s appointment.
After the appointment:
- Schedule a follow-up appointment, if needed, so that you and your child will know when you’ll be back.
- Ask what is likely to happen at the next appointment and how long it will take, so that you and your child know what to expect.
- Find out if there are any things your child should or shouldn’t do following today’s appointment.
- Follow the dentist’s instructions for how to care for teeth after the appointment, so your child can achieve their strong, healthy smile.
